Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism
• Usually this disease present with above these two types.
• Hypothyroidism is the disease most prevalent in the society.
• It is most prevalent in women than men.
Usual Symptoms
• Weight gain: Commonly it is manifested with obesity but in current scenario we are treating such cases those are not suffering from weight gain, instead few cases manifest with weight loss and suffer from hypothyroidism.
• Weakness and fatigue.
• Commonly cold intolerance and rarely some cases are met with heat intolerance.
• Constipation and depression,
• Hoarseness of speech and dry skin.
• Slow heart rate, but many cases are presented with increased heart rate,
• Menorrhagia (Excess of menses), but many suffer from scanty and painful menses.
• Anaemia (Deficiency of blood.
• Lipids and cholesterol are increased and sodium is low.
• Thyroxine level is usually low and few cases present with normal thyroxin level in blood.
• TSH level is elevated.
Hyperthyroidism: Symptoms
• Usually the disease onset is gradual.
• But it may begin acutely.
• This disease is due to over secretion of thyroxin hormone and producing a raised metabolic rate.
• Cardiac and Cardiovascular disturbances are among the most important symptoms occur in early stage.
• Palpitation, increased heart rate is present during the rest & sleep.
• A raised pulse rate during sleep supports diagnosis as Psychological causes are excluded.
• Heart rate may be 100 or more at rest and rise to 150 or more on mild exertion and emotion.
• Shortness of breath on exertion is usual.
• Sudden dyspnoea and distressing sense of suffocation are sometimes present,
• In some cases heart may enlarge and nervous disturbances are always present.
• Symptoms of mood change and invariable restlessness, nervousness and irritability are there.
• Lack or loss of sleep is present, anxiety attacks are common.
• Head Ache, vertigo, depression and even acute mania is present.
• There is always a fine vibratile tremor of the outstretched fingers and often protruded tongue.
• Intolerance of heat is usual and sudden onset of perspiration may be there.
• Hands are hot and sweating even at rest.
• Skin changes include discolouration and occasionally leucoderma may be there.
• Loss of hair is often a complaint.
• Thyroid enlargement may be present at some stage of the disease.
• It is always more marked in women of 15-30 yrs.
Exophthalmoses
• Protrusion of eye ball is present.
• Sometimes protrusion not occur until late in disease.
• General health is always disturbed.
• Appetite is good and some loss of weight is always due to raised metabolic rate.
• Diarrhea may be there.
• Lack of energy and undue fatigue are usually present.
• The menses are decreased or absent and abortion is fairly common.
Ayurvedic View of Hyperthyroidism
• Concept of Aam dosh and tridosh (three humour) involvement is the causative factor of this disease.
• The sluggish metabolic rate is due to the formation of aam and it creates obstruction in the formation of normal hormones and enzymatic secretion is hampered.
